OVHcloud is a European cloud provider operating a large fleet of servers across its own data centres. For teams with a regulatory or contractual reason to keep data inside Europe, it is one of the obvious options. It is worth being precise about what that actually guarantees.
What data residency means here
Choosing a European region means your data is stored and processed in that region. That is the straightforward part, and every major provider offers European regions too.
The distinction people are usually reaching for is jurisdictional rather than geographic. A provider headquartered outside the EU may be subject to legal requests from its home jurisdiction regardless of where the data physically sits. OVHcloud being a European company with European infrastructure changes that calculus.
What residency does not do is make you compliant on its own. GDPR obligations attach to how you handle personal data: your lawful basis, your retention periods, your access controls and your processor agreements. Choosing a European region is one input to that, not a substitute for it.
The vCPU tiers
OVHcloud account configurations are described by their vCPU ceiling. As elsewhere, the number to size against is your peak concurrent compute, not aggregate usage over a month.
A 34 vCPU tier comfortably covers a multi-tier web application, a small container cluster or a moderate batch processing job. If you are running single instances, the ceiling will never be your constraint.
The open port 25 option
OVHcloud restricts outbound SMTP by default, as most providers do. A configuration with port 25 open is for running a genuine mail server rather than for sending application email, which is better relayed through a service.
If you are taking the direct route, the usual requirements apply before you send anything: correct reverse DNS, SPF, DKIM signing, a DMARC record and gradual IP warming. Our port 25 guide sets out the order.
The account creation friction
OVHcloud’s sign-up involves email verification, account type selection and, depending on region, payment method and order profile, an identity verification step. That review is a common source of delay, particularly for international customers whose documents do not match the account details exactly.
This is the practical reason teams buy accounts with billing already active: not to avoid the check, but to avoid waiting on it when a project has already started.
How OVHcloud compares in Europe
| Provider | Strongest for |
|---|---|
| OVHcloud | Breadth of European infrastructure, bare metal alongside public cloud |
| Hetzner | Price per core, German data centres |
| UpCloud | Storage performance, Nordic infrastructure |
All three are meaningfully cheaper than the large platforms for straightforward compute. None of them competes on managed data or machine learning services.
Before you deploy
Change the delivered credentials, enable multi-factor authentication, review what already exists across regions, set a billing alert and configure firewall rules before exposing services. If data residency is the reason you are here, verify the region of every resource you create rather than assuming the account default.
Common questions
Does OVHcloud offer bare metal as well as virtual servers?
Yes. Dedicated servers alongside public cloud instances is one of its distinguishing features.
Is a European region enough for GDPR compliance?
No. It helps, but compliance depends on your own data handling practices and agreements.
How long does account verification take?
It varies by region and profile, from quick to several days when a manual review is triggered.
