UpCloud is a European cloud provider whose main technical differentiator is storage performance. Its MaxIOPS block storage is built to deliver consistently high input/output operations per second, which is a bottleneck people usually discover late.
Why storage performance matters
Compute benchmarks are easy to compare and get most of the attention. In practice, a great many workloads are limited by how fast they can read and write, not by how fast they can calculate.
Workloads where storage is the binding constraint:
- Relational databases under write-heavy load, where transaction commits are I/O bound.
- Search indexes being rebuilt or heavily updated.
- Analytics queries scanning large local datasets.
- Queue and log processing with high write throughput.
- CI pipelines doing large numbers of small file operations.
Workloads where it is not:
- Stateless web and API servers.
- Application workers whose state lives in a managed database elsewhere.
- Static content serving, where caching does the work.
- Batch compute that is CPU bound.
If your bottleneck is in the second list, paying a premium for storage performance buys nothing measurable.
How to tell which you have
Before choosing on storage, measure. On an existing Linux system, look at I/O wait as a proportion of CPU time and at queue depth on the device. Sustained high I/O wait with idle CPU is the signature of a storage-bound workload. If CPU is saturated and I/O wait is low, storage is not your problem.
Database systems expose this more directly: slow query logs full of simple queries, or commit latency that rises under write load, both point at storage.
Where UpCloud sits
UpCloud runs European infrastructure with Nordic roots, which puts it alongside Hetzner and OVHcloud for teams that want European hosting. The three differentiate cleanly:
| Provider | Leads on |
|---|---|
| Hetzner | Lowest price per core |
| OVHcloud | Breadth, bare metal alongside cloud |
| UpCloud | Storage performance and consistency |
Account creation and compliance
UpCloud requires a credit card for verification and runs identity and compliance checks at sign-up, including checks against international sanctions and export control regulations. The platform does not provide services to individuals or entities in countries subject to those measures.
For eligible customers, the verification step is a source of delay rather than a barrier, which is why accounts with billing already active are useful when a project has a deadline. Accounts must be used in line with UpCloud’s terms of service and with the export control and sanctions law that applies to you.
Before you deploy
Change the delivered credentials, enable multi-factor authentication, replace SSH keys, review existing servers and storage across regions, and set a billing alert. If you are moving a database here for the storage performance, benchmark it before and after so you know whether the change actually helped.
Common questions
Is MaxIOPS worth it for a small application?
Usually not. Small applications are rarely storage bound, and standard block storage is cheaper.
Can I change storage type later?
Storage can be migrated, though it involves moving data. Choosing correctly up front is less work.
Does UpCloud offer managed databases?
Yes, alongside managed Kubernetes and object storage.
