Alibaba Cloud is the largest cloud provider in Asia and a credible option for anyone serving users in that region. The case for it is fundamentally geographic: latency to Asian users, and a regional presence that the western platforms match unevenly.
When the region is the reason
Network latency is not negotiable. A user in Singapore or Jakarta talking to a server in Virginia experiences the round trip regardless of how good your code is. For interactive applications, hosting close to users is the single largest performance lever available.
Alibaba Cloud operates regions across mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and beyond, alongside European and North American locations. For Southeast Asian coverage in particular, the footprint is strong.
Mainland China is a special case
Hosting inside mainland China is different from hosting anywhere else, and the difference is regulatory rather than technical.
- ICP filing. Serving a website to users from a mainland China data centre requires an ICP filing. This is a legal registration, it takes time, and it requires a local entity or sponsor.
- Content regulation. Content hosted in mainland China is subject to local law.
- Network conditions. Traffic crossing the border behaves differently from purely domestic traffic.
If you want low latency for Chinese users without the filing process, Hong Kong is the common compromise: better latency than Singapore, without the mainland regulatory requirements.
The service catalogue
The core services map recognisably onto their equivalents elsewhere: Elastic Compute Service for virtual machines, Object Storage Service for object storage, ApsaraDB for managed databases, and a full container and Kubernetes offering.
Two practical notes. Documentation quality in English is inconsistent and lags the Chinese version. And third party tooling support, from infrastructure-as-code providers to monitoring vendors, is thinner than for AWS or Azure. Budget time for both.
When not to choose it
If your users are primarily in Europe or North America, the regional advantage disappears and you are left comparing on ecosystem depth and familiarity, where the established platforms win. Choose Alibaba Cloud because of where your users are, not as a general-purpose default.
Account creation
Registration requires identity information, a payment method and, for some account types, additional verification. Real-name verification applies for mainland China services. As on other platforms, the verification step is a common source of delay for international customers.
Before you deploy
Change the delivered credentials, enable multi-factor authentication on the primary account, create RAM users with scoped policies rather than working as the root account, set a spending alert, and review existing instances across every region. Confirm which region each resource is in, since region selection is the entire reason to be on this platform.
Common questions
Do I need an ICP filing for Hong Kong or Singapore?
No. The requirement applies to mainland China regions.
Is the console available in English?
Yes, though some documentation and newer feature descriptions are more complete in Chinese.
How does pricing compare?
Broadly competitive with the large platforms, with regional variation. Compare the specific region you intend to use rather than headline rates.
