European Data Residency on OVHcloud: What It Does and Does Not Give You

Teams shortlist OVHcloud for European data residency, and the term gets used loosely. It is worth separating three things that often get merged: where data sits, whose law reaches the provider, and whether you are compliant.

Geographic residency

This is the simple part. Choosing a European region means data is stored and processed there. Every large provider offers European regions, so on this axis alone OVHcloud is not distinctive.

Jurisdiction

This is the part people usually mean. A provider headquartered outside the EU may be subject to legal requests from its home jurisdiction regardless of where data physically sits. OVHcloud is a French company operating its own European data centres, which changes that calculus.

Whether it changes it enough for your situation is a legal question, not a technical one, and it depends on your sector, your data and your regulator. What is fair to say is that it is a different position from a US-headquartered provider offering an EU region.

What residency does not do

Residency is one input to compliance, not a conclusion. GDPR obligations attach to how you handle personal data:

  • A lawful basis for processing.
  • Data minimisation and defined retention periods.
  • Access control and encryption appropriate to the risk.
  • A data processing agreement with each processor.
  • Records of processing activities.
  • Breach notification procedures.
  • A route to honour access, correction and deletion requests.

None of these are provided by a region selection. A perfectly located deployment with a public storage bucket and no retention policy is not compliant.

Practical steps

  • Confirm the region of every resource individually rather than trusting an account default. Region is per resource.
  • Check where backups and snapshots are stored. They frequently escape the region assumption.
  • Check where logs go, including any third-party monitoring service.
  • Have the data processing agreement in place before you put personal data on the platform.
  • Encrypt at rest and in transit, and keep key management deliberate.

The last two points are where most of the real work is, and where a residency decision cannot help you.

The other European options

If jurisdiction is the driver, Hetzner in Germany and UpCloud in the Nordics are the other serious candidates. They differentiate cleanly: OVHcloud on breadth and bare metal, Hetzner on price, UpCloud on storage performance. See European cloud providers compared.

Our OVHcloud accounts cover configurations from $30. Accounts remain governed by OVHcloud’s own terms of service and by any law that applies to you.

Common questions

Is a European region enough for GDPR?

No. It helps with transfer questions. Compliance depends on your practices.

Do backups stay in region?

Check explicitly. Backup and snapshot placement is a frequent gap.

Does OVHcloud sign a DPA?

Data processing terms are part of the provider’s contractual documentation. Review them against your obligations.
