AWS vs Azure: Breadth Against Enterprise Fit

AWS and Azure are close on raw capability. The decision between them is usually organisational rather than technical, and the deciding factor is what you already own.

Quick comparison

AWS Azure
Service breadth Widest available Very broad, slightly narrower
Identity IAM, standalone Entra ID, shared with Microsoft 365
Existing licences No equivalent benefit Hybrid Benefit for Windows and SQL
Hierarchy Accounts and Organizations Management groups, subscriptions, resource groups
AI Bedrock, SageMaker Azure AI, Azure Machine Learning
Accounts here 20 configurations from $20 4 configurations from $25

The licensing question

Most comparisons price a bare Linux virtual machine, and on that basis AWS usually looks competitive. That comparison is incomplete for any organisation already running Windows Server or SQL Server.

Azure Hybrid Benefit applies eligible existing licences to Azure compute, so you pay the base rate rather than the licence-inclusive rate. On Windows-heavy estates this can change which platform is cheaper overall. See Azure Hybrid Benefit explained.

Identity and organisational fit

If a company already runs Entra ID, Microsoft 365 and Windows on the desktop, Azure inherits identity, single sign-on, support agreements and compliance documentation that already exist. Replicating that on AWS is real work with a real cost that never appears in a price-per-vCPU table.

Conversely, if you have no Microsoft footprint, that advantage evaporates entirely and you are comparing on services and price.

Where AWS leads

  • Catalogue depth. More services, more instance families, more edge cases covered.
  • Ecosystem. More third-party integrations and a larger pool of experienced engineers.
  • Arm compute. Graviton is mature and frequently the best price for performance. See EC2 instance families.

Where Azure leads

  • Governance hierarchy. Management groups, subscriptions and resource groups give a clean structure for policy at scale. See Azure subscriptions and resource groups.
  • Hybrid deployments, where on-premises and cloud must operate as one estate.
  • Enterprise procurement, where an existing agreement simplifies everything.

Quotas work differently

On AWS, quotas are per account per region. On Azure they are per subscription per region. The practical implication is the same: hitting a limit does not mean the account is exhausted, and increases are requested and reviewed. Plan for it. See AWS service quotas.

Account options on BuyCloudAccess

  • AWS accounts: 20 configurations from $20, including vCPU tiers to 1,920, credits to 100K and Bedrock enabled options.
  • Azure accounts: 4 configurations from $25, including trial and pay-as-you-go options carrying a $200 credit, and larger credit tiers.

On Azure the meaningful difference between trial and pay-as-you-go is what happens when the credit is exhausted: a trial subscription is disabled, a pay-as-you-go subscription continues billing normally. See Azure account tiers.

Which should you choose

  • Existing Microsoft estate? Azure, and the licensing maths usually settles it.
  • No Microsoft footprint, want maximum optionality? AWS.
  • Hybrid on-premises and cloud? Azure.
  • Analytics-centred product? Neither first; see AWS vs Google Cloud.

Common questions

Is Azure cheaper than AWS?

For Windows and SQL workloads with existing licences, frequently yes. For Linux workloads, they are close and depend on shape and commitment.

Which has better AI tooling?

Both offer managed foundation models. Azure fits organisations standardising on Microsoft identity and compliance; AWS offers broader model and infrastructure choice.

Can I use both?

Yes. Keep one primary platform and treat the second as deliberate, since dual operations cost real effort.
