Alibaba Cloud and Google Cloud are both credible general-purpose platforms. In practice the choice between them is usually a question about users rather than technology.
Quick comparison
| Alibaba Cloud | Google Cloud | |
|---|---|---|
| Asia Pacific coverage | Strongest, especially Southeast Asia and China | Good, but thinner in some markets |
| Mainland China | Native, with ICP filing required | Not comparable |
| Analytics | MaxCompute and related | BigQuery, best in class |
| English documentation | Inconsistent, lags Chinese | Comprehensive |
| Third-party tooling | Thinner | Broad |
| Accounts here | 1 configuration from $50 | 7 configurations from $50 |
Choose Alibaba Cloud when geography decides
Network latency is not negotiable. A user in Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur talking to a distant region pays the round trip on every request, and for interactive applications that dominates everything you can do in code.
Alibaba Cloud’s footprint across Southeast Asia, plus mainland China and Hong Kong, is the strongest reason to choose it. If those are your users, the regional advantage outweighs ecosystem depth.
Mainland China is a special case requiring an ICP filing and a local entity or sponsor. Hong Kong is the common compromise, giving good latency without the filing. See ICP filing explained.
Choose Google Cloud when the workload decides
- Analytics. BigQuery’s separation of storage and compute is a genuine operational advantage. See BigQuery cost control.
- Managed ML. Vertex AI with a short path from warehouse to model. See Vertex AI.
- Documentation and ecosystem. Comprehensive English documentation and broad third-party support. This is a real productivity difference.
- Automatic discounts and custom machine shapes. See machine types.
Practical friction with Alibaba Cloud
- English documentation lags the Chinese version and can be inconsistent.
- Infrastructure-as-code and monitoring vendor support is thinner. Budget integration time.
- Real-name verification applies for mainland services.
- External dependencies matter enormously: fonts, analytics, maps or CDNs unreachable from China will undermine local hosting entirely.
Account options on BuyCloudAccess
- Alibaba Cloud accounts: 1 configuration from $50, a free trial option.
- Google Cloud accounts: 7 configurations from $50, with credit tiers of $300, $1,300, $5,000 and $25,000.
Which should you choose
- Users in mainland China or Southeast Asia? Alibaba Cloud.
- Analytics or ML product? Google Cloud.
- Users in Europe or North America? Google Cloud; the regional argument disappears.
- Both markets? Many teams run Google Cloud globally and Alibaba Cloud for the China region specifically.
Common questions
